PGT-M
PGT-M, also known as monogenic disorder testing, is a groundbreaking genetic screening procedure used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF). It focuses on identifying specific genetic mutations or disorders that may be present within an embryo’s DNA. By doing so, PGT-M allows us to select embryos that are free from these hereditary conditions, significantly reducing the risk of passing them on to the next generation.
PGT-M is used to describe single-gene PGD. PGT-M is used to help individuals or couples reduce their risk to have a child with a known inherited disorder caused by mutations in a single gene (“monogenic”), such as cystic fibrosis or Huntington’s disease.
The PGT-M procedure involves several essential steps:
IVF Process: Eggs are retrieved and fertilized through IVF, creating multiple embryos.
Embryo Biopsy: On the fifth or sixth day of development, when embryos reach the blastocyst stage, a few cells are carefully removed from each embryo.
Genetic Analysis: The extracted cells are subjected to genetic analysis to identify any specific mutations or disorders.
Embryo Selection: Embryos that are found to be free from the targeted genetic disorder are selected for transfer into the uterus.
Transferring Healthy Embryos: Only genetically healthy embryos are transferred, increasing the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.

1. Who should consider PGT-M?
PGT-M is recommended for individuals or couples with known genetic mutations or a family history of specific monogenic disorders.
2. Is PGT-M safe for embryos?
Yes, PGT-M is a safe and established procedure, with minimal impact on embryo development.
3. Can PGT-M guarantee a healthy pregnancy?
While it greatly reduces the risk of passing on specific genetic disorders, success depends on various factors, including embryo quality and the woman’s overall health.
4. Does PGT-M require additional IVF cycles?
PGT-M involves one additional step during the IVF process, which may result in slightly higher costs but can significantly enhance the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
5. How does PGT-M benefit fertility outcomes?
PGT-M ensures that only embryos free from specific genetic disorders are transferred, reducing the risk of inherited conditions in offspring.

What is IVF Treatment (In Vitro Fertilization)?
IVF Treatment (In Vitro Fertilization), commonly known as ‘test-tube baby’, is a procedure in which the egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body. The woman’s eggs are removed from the ovaries and fertilized in a fluid medium in the laboratory. Once fertilized, the fertilized egg is cultured for three to five days and then transferred to the woman’s uterus, in order to establish pregnancy. This IVF procedure is undertaken in IVF centers by IVF doctors qualified to administer this process.
Who is IVF Treatment (In Vitro Fertilization) suitable for?
IVF Treatment is advised for women who have problems with their fallopian tubes, due to which normal conception is not possible. The fallopian tubes may be damaged, blocked or in some cases, absent. It is also used in cases of male infertility, due to low sperm count or sperm quality. In such situations, it is used along with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
